Update from Dr. Luttrell/ Back to School News 8-2-20

Good afternoon Tiger families.  This is Dr. Luttrell and here are a few announcements for our first week of school.

We miss all of you and hope you are staying healthy! Although this is not the way we hoped to start school, we feel it is best to begin online to ensure the health and safety of all of our Tusculum View family and extended family.  Hopefully the cases will begin to decrease and we can be back in person soon!

Friday will mark our first day of online instruction.  We will not be having any virtual parent meetings on Wednesday, but teachers will have introductory videos posted to our school website.  You will also be receiving more information on Wednesday or Thursday on how students will access their first day of learning with teachers on Friday.  Please be on the look out for emails from Tusculum View.

Our school notification system has changed.  When you receive messages and alerts from Tusculum View they will now come from 423.972.4313 or TVNotifications@gcschools.net.  If you have changed your phone or email please call the office to update your information, 423.639.2751.

More information will be sent out regarding lunch and breakfast distribution while we are learning online.

Online teachers will be contacting online EDGE students and regular classroom teachers will be contacting students who did not choose the virtual EDGE Academy.

Lessons and assigned work will be much different during our online learning this time.  Students will be held responsible for work and attendance. More information and an online learning handbook will be coming from our district office later this week.  Online learning, both in the online EDGE Academy and for online learning while we are the RED community spread zone will consist of assigned times for live Zoom instruction, recorded videos, tutorials, assignments, and assessments.  Canvas will be our online learning platform and where all students will find their assignments. Our online learning will have higher learning expectations, structure, and responsibility for completing and turning in work than what students were given in the spring with Choice Boards.  Live Zoom meetings will be recorded for viewing if unable to participate during the scheduled time.

Kindergarten students have been divided into small groups and will be attending on a staggered schedule form August 7 – 20.  Kindergarten teachers have been contacting parents and will be sending out letters to parents outlining when students will attend school during the staggered schedule. Kindergarten students should wear their mask to school.  Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase or students may bring their lunch.

EDGE Academy students will be hearing from their teachers in the coming days, if they have not already.

Below is a schedule of what to expect this week:

Tuesday – Drive Through Luaua at Tusculum View Front Circle from 5 – 6:30 pm.  Please feel free to wear your Hawaiian attire and decorate your cars as we celebrate our return to school.  All cars will enter from Luther Street and turn into the front circle entrance.  Cars will go around the circle and exit the side parking lot back onto Luther St and out towards Tusculum View Access Rd. NO access will be granted from Lafayette St and 11E.

Wednesday – Introductory videos from classroom teachers will be posted on the Tusculum View website.  Visit our website to access and learn more about your student’s teacher!

Thursday – This will be a day to pickup student computers and “at home” learning kits from teachers.  Pickup times are from 7 am – 6 pm at the front circle of the school.  Also, below you will find instructions on how to care for your laptop bag if your student has one.  If you do not have a laptop bag, you may store it and the charger in a bag you may have at home, such as a backpack.

Tutorial videos on how to access and use Canvas will be available for families.  These videos will walk families and students through Canvas and hopefully help you become more familiar with our online learning.  Please know online learning is new for all of us and we will all work together as we learn and grow in this new environment.  We are available to answer questions and help as we can.

Friday – First day of online learning.  Grades 1 -5 students, parents, and guardians will receive a link to Zoom meetings.  Teachers will walk students through using Canvas, classroom expectations, and get to know each other activities.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school.

I hope you all have a good week and stay well!

Dr. Luttrell
