Dr. Luttrell's Weekly Message 9-28-20

Important Back to School Information

Hello Tiger families!  This Monday we welcome back our Hybrid A group and our B group on Wednesday.  There are several items that you will need to know before our first in person day for many students.  Masks must be worn at all times while in the building and outside if closer than 6 feet.

Fall Pictures

Fall pictures for students will be September 28th for the A group of students (please note this is the first day of the hybrid schedule for all students). The B group will take pictures on October 8th.  If you are an EDGE student, you may come on September 28th from 8-10 to have your picture taken. THESE PHOTOS WILL BE USED FOR THE YEARBOOK.

Car Tags

To ensure the safety of students, all car rider vehicle’s picking up students MUST have a car tag issued from our office.  Only a parent or guardian can obtain these from the office, but will need to distribute them to whoever will be picking up your student(s).  All persons with a car tag MUST be on the approved pick up list. If a car tag is not present in the vehicle, the driver must park and come in the office to check out the student with their driver’s license and be on the APPROVED PICK UP LIST.  If you have not gotten your car tag, please come to the office and pick them up prior to the 28th.  You receive 2 at no cost and extras are $2 each.  Only a parent or guardian can add or remove individuals from the approved pick up list and must do this in person at the office.

Temperature Checks and Screening

Student temperatures should be taken by parents and health screen questions answered before coming to school. School personnel will no longer be taking temperatures as students arrive at school.  Please see the revised GCS reopening plan sent by Mr. Starnes on 9-25-20 on the district website at www.gcschools.net by clicking on the COVID-19 Re-Entry Information link to view the updated plan.  If your student has been in close contact with a confirmed COVID case, please contact Jeannie Woolsey at 423.823.2916 before sending your child to school.

Arrival and Dismissal

  1. Arrival -- 7:15 - 7:59 at side parking lot.  School begins at 8:00.  If you arrive after 7:59, you will need to go to the office and sign your student in.  If you arrive after 8:00, you will receive a tardy.
  2. If you have questions about your bus, please call the school.
  3. Dismissal Time -- We dismiss each day at 3:00. First, walkers. Next, car riders. Finally, bus riders when buses arrive.
  4. Due to possibility students or staff needing to be picked up due to sickness, we will need to keep access to our building open as much as possible.  Car rider vehicles may begin lining up at 2:55 at the front circle and side parking lot.   Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
  5. Construction on our new parking lot will begin September 28th.  Please be cautious as you enter and exit side parking lot.
  6. ESP will be available for all students. If any parents are interested, please call the school office 423-639-2751 so an ESP packet can be sent home with your child. Students can stay for ESP the day the packet is completed and turned into the school office. Be sure to send a note letting us know your child's change in afternoon dismissal plans.  During hybrid schedule, ESP will only be available on the days your students attends school.
  7. Transportation -- If your child changes their transportation from one day to the next a written note MUST be sent to school with your child in order for us to get your child to the appropriate location without confusion.

Please practice with your child buckling up and unbuckling in your car and any car that students may ride in.  Students should strive to be able to unbuckle themselves and get out of their cars in the morning and get in their car seats and buckle up themselves in the afternoons.

For Grades K- 5: IF YOU CHOSE SIDE PARKING LOT FOR YOUR AFTERNOON PICKUP ON TRANSPORTATION SURVEY, YOU WILL PICK UP ON SIDE LOT.  IF YOU CHOSE FRONT CIRCLE, YOU WILL PICK UP AT THE FRONT CIRLE. You will pick up here everyday, as this is where your child will go.

Dismissal will occur at the front circle and side parking lot at 3:00 pm.  Please refer to the following traffic flow guide.  PreK vehicles line up at 2:30 (front circle) and K-5 line up at 2:55 pm (front and side).

Attendance

Please remember the ways your child is counted as present for the day in PowerSchool.  On Hybrid Schedule, your child will attend 2 days a week in person and on the other three days they will complete work in Canvas.  This may be watching recorded videos of their teacher or other assignments.  Students need to complete work for each online, asynchronous day to be counted present. Students will continue to have until Sunday night to complete all assignments.

For EDGE Academy, students must either attend Zooms, watch recorded Zooms, or complete work for the day.  If your child has none of these for the day, they are counted absent.  Attendance for online learning is taken on Mondays for the previous week to allow for those parents who help their children complete work on the weekends.  Parents may send in a parent note by the next Friday (work due on Sunday night, parent notes due on Friday) if students do not complete work for the previous week. Please make sure your child is completing their work for the day and you are communicating with their teacher if you are having issues.  Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.

If your child misses a day a school, per policy you must submit written documentation to the school office within two days of the child returning to school. You are allowed three parent notes per semester. While on hybrid or EDGE, you will have until the Friday following the Sunday due date to submit notes for absences for the previous week.

  1. Several ways to submit your written documentation
    1. Send written parent note, doctor, dentist, or therapy note with your child to school. Your child will give the written note to their teacher and it will be sent down to the school office.
    2. Email your excuse to Mrs. Mary at freshourm@gcschools.net
    3. Fill out the Online Absentee Reporting. This is found on Tusculum View Website--Click Parent Tab--Click Online Absentee Reporting--Remember to give the reason why your child was absent from school.

Thank you for all you do to support our school and deepen the partnership between parents and school.  We acknowledge that this is not an easy time.  There are obstacles, issues, misunderstandings, and let's be honest, we are all tired.  BUT - we have to keep on the journey to supporting our students and doing our best to learn and grow.  Work hard on the work and set aside time to get it all done, then take time to rest and enjoy each other.

We can't wait to see our Tigers!
